How to not be out of HIPAA compliance with Microsoft

It’s a really easy thing.  GET OFF OF WINDOWS XP.

You see, and most folks don’t understand this, by being on Windows XP after April 14th, 2014, you’ll no longer receive any security updates for the product…and that puts you out of compliance with HIPAA.  I know most folks scream at the idea of moving Operating Systems, but it’s going to be a matter of fact that you have to.  XP has been around since 2001, and has far outlived itself.  It’s time to take it off life support and let it pass on into the annals of computing history. 🙂

Most importantly, the best way to handle this is to talk to your vendors.  Likely if you’re talking to them, they’re working on a solution to move your current system to Windows 7 or even Windows 8.  These newer systems operate with memory and systems far more efficiently (i used to run 7 on an old IBM laptop from 2000 with 512MB of ram), and should be able to work with some of your hardware you have, or for a small upgrade.

Even if an upgrade in hardware sounds scary and expensive, they aren’t.  Heck, you can also consider Virtualization and VDI (which basically has a server controlling a number of desktops)…or even a Thin Clients & Citrix combination.

For those of you at home who say “oh this won’t affect me”…it will.  If you’ve got an ancient PC, and have neglected upgrading for whatever reason…take advantage of the numerous deals I write about…because one day you’re going to be USCWOAP.

Little things can cause big things…see?   Happy Friday!
